The man who authorities say has admitted kidnapping Beverly Carter, an Arkansas real estate agent whose body was later discovered in a shallow grave, said Tuesday that she was targeted because she was 'a rich broker' - but he said he did not kill her.
In comments to reporters after he was questioned by sheriff's investigators, the suspect, Arron Lewis, implicated a second man named Trevor, whom he described as a 'co-defendant.' He said that they had exchanged text messages. He did not give a last name.
In footage captured by NBC affiliate KARK, Lewis said that he had not killed Carter. Asked whether he had anything to say to Carter's family, he said: 'I'm sorry.' Lewis was also asked why Carter was targeted, and he said: 'She was just a woman that worked alone, a rich broker.'
A spokesman for the Pulaski County sheriff did not immediately return a phone message. The sheriff has planned a news conference for Tuesday afternoon.
Carter, 49, disappeared Thursday from a home she was showing near Little Rock. Lewis, 33, was arrested Monday. Authorities said early Tuesday that they planned to add a charge of capital murder. He was due in court later. IN-DEPTH - Erin McClam
