Several memorials, ceremonies scheduled in San Antonio area to commemorate victims of 9/11
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonians along with the rest of the nation will pause Thursday to remember the thousands of lives lost during, and in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon.
Thursday will mark 13 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Several memorials and services will be held Thursday across the San Antonio area to commemorate the day.
-- The San Antonio 110 9/11 Memorial Climb will take place at the Alamodome this year instead of the Tower of the Americas.
The climb pays tribute to the firefighters that sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001.
Check-in begins at 6 a.m. A ceremony will be held at 7:30 a.m. and the climb begins at 8:46 a.m. Click here for more information.
-- San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and SAFD Chief Charles Hood will take part in a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony and Flag Presentation at SAFD Fire Station #1 on North Cherry at 2 p.m.
Chief Petty Officers with the Navy Medicine Training Support Center will present Chief Hood and the SAFD with several U.S. flags that have been flown at Ground Zero in NYC, the Pentagon, the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania, and on the USS San Antonio in honor of those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.
The NMTSC Color Guard and Choir will present the Colors and sing the National Anthem. The 4th Recon Marines will also perform a gun salute followed by the sounding of Taps.
-- Phase 1 of the San Antonio 9/11 renovation has been completed in time for the September 11 Commemoration Ceremony.
New Life Christian Ministry will hold a Commemoration of the September 11, 2001 events at the San Antonio 9/11 Memorial at 9 a.m.
The newly renovated memorial is on the campus of New Life Christian Center at 6610 U.S. Highway 90 West.
The Commemoration keynote speaker is Brig Gen (Ret.) Scott Bethel. There will be a wreath laying ceremony and the names of thirty who perished will be read by NLCA students. Judge Nelson W. Wolff and SAFD Chief Charles Hood will be in attendance.
-- UIW is inviting the community to a 9/11 prayer service on campus. Special guest Fr. Eddie Bernal will share words of comfort and hope for the country.
The service will be held in Our Lady's Chapel located in UIW's Administration Building at 4:30 p.m.
As a prelude to the prayer service, the bell outside of Our Lady's Chapel will ring at 9 a.m. followed by a moment of silence in commemoration of the events that occurred the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
-- The Gaylor Non-Commissioned Officer Academy is hosting this year's Joint Base San Antonio 9/11 Remembrance Run at JBSA-Lackland.
The run will be held at the Medina Annex Gym track at 7 a.m. The race continues for nine hours and 11 minutes, ending at 4:11 p.m. The event is open to anyone -- military and civilian, running or walking, regardless of time or distance.

-- The life and sacrifice of LTC Karen Wagner will be remembered and honored by the Judson ISD in a special wreath laying ceremony.
The JROTC Department at Wagner High School will perform the memorial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Harry Wurzbach Road at 8:45 a.m.
LTC Wagner, who died at the Pentagon as a result of the 9/11 attacks, was a 1979 graduate of Judson High School.
Wagner JROTC's gravesite ceremony will include the traditional wreath laying, remembrances of Lt. Col. Wagner's contributions as a student and soldier, and ending with taps being played.
Judson High School will remember LTC Wagner and those who died on 9/11 during an extended advisory period to begin school.
-- HelpingaHero.org will present the keys to a custom adapted home to double amputee SPC Justin Lane, USA (Ret.) in Canyon Lake.
Over 500 people are expected to attend the welcome home ceremony and the public is invited.
SPC Justin Lane, USA (Ret.) became a double amputee as the result of an IED blast in Afghanistan. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at 1117 Rebecca Way.
