It must be something about hot lights, gaffer tape and catered food: After directors yell 'Cut!,' offscreen romance sometimes blooms among lead actors. And, as schoolchildren are wont to point out, first comes love, then comes marriage, and then come children in a baby carriage.
Today, marriage is sometimes left out of this equation. But the daughter Ryan Gosling, 33, and Eva Mendes, 40, welcomed yesterday are just the latest celebrities to spawn after filming - the pair met working on ' The Place Beyond the Pines ' in 2011.. Here's a look back at other productive pairings:
HUMPHREY BOGART AND LAUREN BACALLBogie and Bacall met on the set of 'To Have and Have Not' in 1944. As The Washington Post's Soraya McDonald put it, their ' obvious chemistry practically leapt off the celluloid' despite a 25-year age difference. They were married until Bogart's death in 1957 and had two children.
HALLE BERRY AND OLIVER MARTINEZ'Even when a movie ends up crappy, other good things can come out of it,' Chelsea Handler told Berry in 2012. 'You met your fiancé' - French actor Martinez - on a movie.'
'On a s-t movie,' Berry said. As US Weekly pointed out, this was a reference to 'Dark Tide.' Budget: $25 million. Box office receipts: Less than $500,000. More joyful was the union: The couple had a son last year.
SUSAN SARANDON AND TIM ROBBINS'It was obvious,' producer Mark Burg said of romance brewing on the set of 'Bull Durham' (1988). 'You'd be sitting in the bar of the hotel, where almost everyone was staying except Susan. And Tim would be drinking with us and then say he was turning in and walk out to the parking lot and get in his rental car and head to Susan's house.' Together for 20 years, the couple had two children.
RICHARD BURTON AND ELIZABETH TAYLORThe Daily Telegraph called it ' the deadly love that never died' the torrid affair between Burton and Taylor begun on the set of 'Cleopatra' in 1961 when both were married to other people. Some say a version of their tumultuous relationship - they married and divorced, then remarried and re-divorced - was presented onscreen in 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' in 1966. As Turner Classic Movies explained, 'some Taylor biographers would later claim that she and Burton never stopped playing the roles of George and Martha, and that it ultimately destroyed their marriage.' Still, the couple kept it together long enough to adopt a daughter.
ANGELINA JOLIE AND BRAD PITTBrangelina formed for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The couple tied the knot like Voltron on the set of 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' (2005). Perhaps more memorable than the film is the alliance formed between two A-listers - one who is a goodwill ambassador just weeks ago, and are raising six children.
Of course, every match that begins on set doesn't necessary end with wedding bells. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez met on the set of ' Gigli,' but later went on to marry others. To add insult to injury, the movie became one of the most notorious flops in movie history.
