By Will Brinson | NFL Writer Cam Newton is reportedly 'unlikely' to play on Sunday. (USATSI)
The idea of Cam Newton not playing in Week 1 against the Buccaneers simmered under the surface all week. It's now starting to bubble over the top.
Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk (and formerly of the Charlotte Observer) reports 'it's sitll unlikely' Newton plays on Sunday against the Bucs.
Newton suffered a rib injury during the preseason against the Patriots and it's limited his ability to practice.
Ron Rivera's comments throughout the week indicated Newton might very well not play this week as the Panthers take the 'long-haul approach' to their franchise quarterback.
If Newton is out, Derek Anderson will get the nod. The Panthers are probably confident Anderson can do everything they need for offensive purposes, but it's obviously a significant drop-off from what Newton brings to the table.
Should Cam end up missing the game, the Buccaneers suddenly look like a bold choice for games like survivor, etc.
