Christian Petersen/Entertainment/Getty Carolina Panthers player Greg Hardy has been deactivated from the Sept. 14 game due to a domestic abuse conviction stemming from a shocking and violent incident in May. However, he played one week prior.
Yet again, the NFL is facing controversy over their players' seeming propensity toward domestic violence.

What's interesting about the Panthers' choice to deactivate Greg now is the fact that he played in the Sept. 7 game - and the charges against him stem from an incident back in May. In July, he was convicted of beating his girlfriend and threatening to kill her.
He was ordered only to 18 months probation and a 60-day jail sentence ( which was suspended). He delayed a potential suspension from the NFL by requesting an appeal; his case will be held before a jury in November. Take Our Poll
The arrest warrant accused Greg of 'grabbing [the] victim and throwing her to the floor, throwing into a bathtub, slamming her against a futon, and strangling her.'
'He looked me in my eyes and he told me he was going to kill me,' said his 24-year-old then-girlfriend, in the police report. 'I was so scared I wanted to die. When he loosened his grip slightly, I said just, 'Do it. Kill me.''
In a domestic violence protective order obtained by WSOC-TV, the victim's full, shocking report is as follows:
'Greg Hardy attacked me in his apartment.[Greg] picked me up and threw me into the tile tub area in his bathroom. I have bruises from head to toe, including my head, neck, back, shoulders, arms, legs, elbow and feet.
'[Greg] pulled me from the tub by my hair, screaming at me that he was going to kill me, break my arms and other threats that I completely believe. He drug me across the bathroom and out into the bedroom.[Greg] choked me with both hands around my throat while I was lying on the floor.
'[Greg] picked me up over his head and threw me onto a couch covered in assault rifles and/or shotguns. I landed on those weapons.[Greg] bragged that all of those assault rifles were loaded. Landing on those weapons bruised my neck and back.
'[Greg] screamed for his administrative assistant (
Sammy Curtis) to come into the room and hold me down. [Greg] and [Sammy]then took me into the living room area. I wasn't nearly strong or fast enough to escape. I begged them to let me go and I wouldn't tell anyone what he did. They took me out into the hall, pushed me down and went back inside his apartment. I crawled to the elevator and ran into CMPD.' Following his conviction and request for appeal, the Carolina Panthers had the following statement to offer at the time:
'We have just learned of the verdict and are respectful of the process. We do not have a comment at this time.'
They can't have been that respectful of the process, considering that the team allowed Greg to play in the Sept. 7 game.
While we applaud the Panthers for deactivating Greg, it's an obvious PR move brought on by the even greater negative attention that the NFL would receive had they allowed him to play. Greg was still a convicted domestic abuser one week prior to his deactivation.
Much like the fact that Ray Rice was suspended only once video was released by TMZ of him punching his then-fiancée in the face and knocking her out cold, the NFL only seems interested in taking action when they're backed into a corner. All eyes are now on
Ray MacDonald, 30, a defensive end on the
San Francisco 49ers, who was accused of hitting his pregnant fiancée on Aug. 31. Ray was released on $25,000 bail later in the morning of Aug. 31 on charges of felony domestic violence.
As of this writing, Ray is set to play in an 8:30pm on Sept. 14 in a game versus the
Chicago Bears.
49ers CEO
Jed York has allowed Ray to practice and play so far, telling KNBR radio: '[My] character is, I will not punish somebody until we see evidence that it should be done or before an entire organization, an entire legal, police investigation, shows us something,' according to CSN Bay Area.
The 49ers' upcoming decision regarding Ray McDonald will do a lot to mark their priorities moving forward.
