Derek Jeter's final game at Yankee Stadium is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. It might not end until Friday morning.
Forecasts say the chance of rain in the Bronx at game time is 100 percent, creating the possibility of lengthy delays.
The stadium is expected to be full, and wet. In recent weeks, the demand for tickets has soared, with some fans paying thousands of dollars on the resale market for the chance to see Jeter's final game at Yankee Stadium. Now they might have to spend a few more dollars, for rain parkas.
The tarp covering the infield was removed only briefly Thursday for the grounds crew to apply a drying agent. According to a spokesman at Major League Baseball, every effort will be made to play the game Thursday - even if it means prolonged delays.
'We're going to do everything in our power and baseball is doing everything in their power,' Manager Joe Girardi said. 'So, I would suggest you make some plans because I think we're going to be here for a while.'
Girardi said he was under the impression that if the game could not be played Thursday and it ultimately had a bearing on the playoffs, it would be made up Monday. The only significance it could have is on home-field advantage in the playoffs: The Orioles, the American League East champion, entered Thursday's game with 95 wins and four games to play. They trailed the Los Angeles Angels, who had 98 wins but three games to play.
