'Sons Of Anarchy' star Charlie Hunnam is finally opening up about his reason for dropping out of the highly-anticipated 'Fifty Shades Of Grey,' and it turns out that the speculation up until now has been all wrong. (No, he was not worried that acting out the steamy material would ruin his career!)
Charlie Hunnam's departure from the role of Christian Grey opposite
Dakota Johnson easily made more headlines than his casting! His decision cast a pallor on the project, with many speculating that the script and direction of the film was, basically, disastrous and career-ending. However, one year after dropping out and in advance of Sons Of Anarchy's final season premiere which aired Sept. 9, Charlie has opened up about the real reason for his dropping out. Charlie Hunnam in 'Fifty Shades Of Grey': 'SoA' Star On Why He Dropped Out
Charlie essentially had a 'nervous breakdown' when he considered the 'black and white' reality of his packed schedule, the actor revealed to Moviefone.
While he was always aware that shooting Fifty Shades Of Grey so soon after the sixth season of Sons Of Anarchy would wrap, production ended up taking longer than anticipated. Also on his plate was a role in
Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, which the director had scheduled around Charlie specifically.
'I was going to finish Sons at like 11 p.m. Friday night, get on the plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for Fifty, missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning,' Charlie told Moviefone.

'And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting Crimson Peak in Toronto. I just had like ... frankly, something of a nervous breakdown.'
We don't blame him! Charlie Hunnam: Dropping Out Of 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Was A 'Sh*t Situation'
Following the uproar after he dropped out, Charlie realized the 'grand scale' of the film and appeared relieved by his decision - 'I really didn't want to fail on such a grand scale and I just couldn't transition from Jax Teller to Christian Grey in 48 hours. I bit off more than I could chew and it was painful. I loved the character and I wanted to do it.
'It was just a sh*t situation,' he finished. 'I was really, really, sorry to do it. It was one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations.'
HollywoodLifers, what do you think about Charlie's reason for leaving? Did you think it was because of the script? And are you sorry you won't see him as Christian Grey? Let us know!
