The San Diego Chargers got three Philip Rivers to Antonio Gates touchdown passes and three Nick Novak field goals to beat the Seattle Seahawks, 30-21, on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.
The two first half Rivers-Gates TD passes were for 8 yards, while the final connection was for 21 yards.
On the day, Rivers completed 28 of 37 passes for 284 yards and Gates has 7 catches for 96 yards.
Novak's field goals were of 50, 43 and 28 yards.
The news was not all good for the Chargers, however. Running back Ryan Mathews was carted off in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury.
The Chargers (1-1) are at Buffalo next Sunday.
9/14/2014 at Qualcomm StadiumSeattle (1-1) scored both late in the second quarter and late in the third. Just before halftime the Seahawks took just 52 seconds on a 5-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to Robert Turbin. Then, just before the third quarter gun, Seattle got a 14-yard TD pass from Wilson to Marshawn Lynch.
It was the third touchdown of the game for Seattle. In the first quarter, Seattle got a 51-yard run by Percy Harvin. Although replays clearly showed that Harvin stepped out of bounds on the play it was not overturned.
For Seattle, Wilson completed 16 of 22 passes for 188 yards. Harvin led Seattle with 45 yards on two carries and Jermaine Kearse has 4 receptions for 61 yards.
