CLEVELAND - Hopes that St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford merely hyperextended his surgically repaired left knee were dashed Sunday when a magnetic resonance imaging examine confirmed the worst - Bradford tore the anterior cruciate ligament that was rebuilt 10 months ago, a person familiar with the results told USA TODAY Sports.
That person spoke on condition of anonymity since the club has yet to announce the injury.
Expectations are that Bradford's fifth season is over before it could ever begin.
The first overall pick of the 2010 draft suffered the injury on the opening drive of Saturday night's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns when Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant rolled into his left leg. Bradford was seen in the locker room walking, albeit with a limp under his own power and coach Jeff Fisher said afterward that at worst, it appeared the knee was hyperextended.
But Sunday's MRI confirmed the Rams' worst fears.
The team will now turn to 13th-year journeyman Shaun Hill, who is 13-13 for his career as a starter. PHOTOS: Best of NFL preseason Related Video
