After Tracy was involved in a gruesome car accident on June 7 that killed a fellow comedian and left him in critical condition, many feared that he would lose the battle for his life. And three days after the crash, that fear grew even more intense as Twitter users began speculating that Tracy had passed away.
These days, a comment on Twitter spreads so much faster than actual real news, so when people began tweeting that
Tracy Morgan had died three days after being involved in a violent car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike, yet another death hoax was born. Tracy Morgan Dead? Fans Tweet
For some odd (and actually, sad) reason - possibly a false news report - people began tweeting that Tracy had passed away on June 10. And the fake news spread like wildfire:

As most death hoaxes go, people seemed to see tweets about Tracy's apparent death and tweeted a reaction themselves, without first checking to find out if the tweet was actually true. Tracy Morgan Death Hoax Has A Backlash
Of course it's not. A full day after the June 7 accident, Tracy's rep released a statement:
While Tracy remains in critical condition, he has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign. He sustained a number of injuries including a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs. He had surgery earlier today on his leg. We expect him to remain in the hospital for several weeks. His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.
Then on June 10, the rep stated, 'There has been no change in Tracy's condition today. He remains in critical but stable condition.'
It's just so unfortunate that hoaxes like this get started and gain so much momentum, as if people deep down want the worst to be true so they can tweet about it. Tracy's family has enough to worry about aside from seeing millions of people spread rumors about his death. Thankfully, this time there appeared to be a major backlash to this hoax, as just as many Twitter users took to the site to debunk the hoax and tell others to stop tweeting about it:
