Nintendo held its E3 2014 'Digital Event' press conference today, revealing a bunch of new games for fans to clamour over.
If you missed the presentation, here's everything the iconic developer had to show this year. Super Smash Bros. (Wii U/3DS)
Nintendo started with an in-depth look at the upcoming Super Smash Bros game for Wii U and 3DS.
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's president and CEO, faced off with Reginald 'Reggie' Fils-Aime, president and COO for Nintendo of America, in a friendly battle with their Miis. In a dramatic twist, Iwata was able to turn the tide by placing a Mario figurine on the Wii U GamePad - referring to the NFC platform announced in May.
'Mii fighters' will come in three varieties - brawlers for heavy attacks, swordfighters for technical combat and gunners for long-range blasts. With three different Mii classes and 12 special moves for each, the upcoming game will boast a total of 36 combinations for players to test.
Additional trailers showed off extra game modes for the 3DS version, which will be available on October 3, before the Wii U version in the holiday season. Amiibo (Wii U)
Reggie then explained Amiibo, the NFC platform it announced earlier this year. The Nintendo exec confirmed that figures will have stats that evolve as you play with them. It can be customised, upgraded and taken with your for other games, including those already available on the Nintendo Wii U - such as the family-friendly Mario Kart 8.
Amiibo will debut with support for Super Smash Bros this Winter. Yoshi's Wooly World (Wii U)
Fabric and wool was a stand-out element in Kirby's Epic Yarn, a game for the Nintendo Wii that focused on younger audiences. The company today introduced Yoshi's Wooly World, a spiritual successor that retains much of the same aesthetics, charm and sound design.
If you've played Little Big Planet on the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable, you'll have a good idea of the visual style and friendly nature that Nintendo is trying to introduce. The video game is slated for a 2015 release - the company refrained from giving a firm release date. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U)
Toad is a beloved member of the Mario family, but until now he's never (really) featured in a game of his own. Nintendo is looking to change that with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a new Wii U title due this holiday.
The teaser trailer was remarkably short, but what little was shown revealed excellent level design, visuals and puzzle-based gameplay. It's important for Nintendo to develop new ideas and franchises - even if it's around existing characters. With novel, unique gameplay experiences, there's no reason why Toad couldn't lead that charge. The Legend of Zelda (Wii U)
Nintendo delved into the next instalment in its hugely popular The Legend of Zelda franchise. The company showed fresh footage of the title on Wii U, which offered some beautiful locales and an encounter with a wildly original monster. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire
A remake of the GameBoy Advance titles Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire had already been confirmed, but during its 'Digital Event' Nintendo showed a new trailer with a hefty amount of footage. The remakes for the Nintendo 3DS use the same engine found in Pokemon X and Y - a fully-realized 3D world, which represents a massive step forward for the hugely popular franchise.
The two games will launch simultaneously on November 21. Bayonetta 2
Bayonetta 2 is one of the few third-party exclusives coming to the Nintendo Wii U. Developed by Platinum Games, the title is a departure from most of the content usually released for Nintendo hardware. It's a mature game, with lots of fantasy violence and a provocative outfit worn by the titular character. Anyone that has played the Devil May Cry franchise should immediately recognize the over-the-top combo-based combat. Hyrule Warriors
The Legend of Zelda is a beloved franchise, but Nintendo believes it can use the IP to greater effect by collaborating with other developers. Hyrule Warriors is a rare attempt to place the series in a completely different gameplay genre - early footage showed Princess Zelda and Midna dealing serious damage to an overwhelming number of enemies - a hallmark of the Dynasty Warriors franchise that it's based on. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Kirby has been in a lot of games recently, but Nintendo doesn't appear to be slowing down In a brief trailer, the pink blob was shown powering through levels on a new Wii U title, due sometimes in 2015. Xenoblade Chronicles X
Xenoblade Chronicles was one of the best Japanese role-playing games on the Nintendo Wii. It didn't ship millions of units like Call of Duty or Madden, but it struck a chord with fans of classic franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
Nintendo has clearly listened and picked up a sequel from developer Monolith Soft. Hardcore Nintendo fans should be very pleased indeed. Mario Maker (Wii U)
Ever wanted to build your own classic Mario stages? Well, you can now with Mario Maker. A short teaser trailer showed the player drawing bridges and platforms with the stylus, before playing the user-generated stage with the beloved plumber. Splatoon
Splatoon is a new IP from Nintendo. That's right, a new IP! The company has been criticised recently for relying too heavily on its classic properties - without new ideas, it seemed the Japanese studio was struggling to bring in new players.
Splatoon is a competitive, arena-based game that tasks players with covering a small area with brightly-colored ink. Players need to make sure their own color is more prevalent than their opponents - ink can be used to tackle other players, and also accelerate the character's movement around the stage.
It's a clever idea and appears to echo the classic mantra: Easy to pick up, hard to master. The striking visuals and high-paced combat really stood out and, while not the most detailed game, it really showed off what the Nintendo Wii U is capable of.
