NEW YORK - Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp had nothing good to say about Michael Strahan before the retired New York Giants standout was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
When Sapp saw Strahan at the "3rd Annual NFL Honors" at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday night, he wanted to convey one message to his rival.
Sapp wanted forgiveness.
"I hugged him and wouldn't let him go," Sapp, an NFL Network analyst, said during NFL Game Day on Sunday. "I said, 'Please forgive me.' I said, 'Dumb Lex Luthor came to the city of Gotham and pulled Superman's cape. How foolish could I have been, my man? Please forgive me.
"And if he tells the story any different that, he's lying to you, America, because I sure did apologize. I'm going to beg for forgiveness because there's a party in Canton, and I promise you, I'm not going to miss it."
However, he did not divulge Strahan's response to his apology.
Sapp's apology ended an intense war of words between both men prior to Super Bowl XLVIII.
Sapp, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year, previously said Strahan's résumé was not that of a Hall of Famer. Strahan fired back his own set of insults at Sapp and even said, "The tiger does not pay attention to the opinion of the sheep." Sapp eventually said he would force Strahan to stop disrespecting him.
Instead of challenging Strahan to a fight on Saturday night, he challenged his fellow Hall of Famer to forgive him.
"Welcome to the club, buddy," Sapp said. "I'm so happy he's there. We're all there. This game cannot be told without Michael Strahan and Warren Sapp because Sapp and Strahan go well together."
